Shramdaan during Watershed Creation Activity at Sukalwadi Village

Participated in Shramdan during Watershed Creation Activity @Sukalwadi Village, Purandar taluka (Pani Foundation)

This event was organized by Barclays Citizenship activity volunteers in conjunction with Pani Foundation volunteers. We started from Wakad around 4:45am and picked volunteers from other locations. The total distance was approx 83km. Near the village, there was a railway crossing where we had to stop for 20mins. We reached the village at 7:15am.

Approximate 100 volunteers from Barclays joined this event. We joined hand in hand and contributed to the cause. Villagers were very welcoming. We walked through the village's main street and shouted slogans in Hindi and Marathi like "Jal hai to Kal hai""tumhala kai pahije, mala pani pahije. Pani kaun denar, Me denar". Few villagers played drums (Desi Nagada).

For doing "Shramdaan" (Manual Labour), We reached the fields where villagers have already done digging for 2 days. All volunteers divided themselves into multiple teams. Each team had 2-3 people who were digging and filling the container with mud and with the help of the human chain made by others those mud containers were thrown to the sides.

After shramdaan of 2 hours, we gathered to have breakfast ("Poha"). There was some delay in breakfast arrangement so Pani Foundation volunteers took the opportunity and brief about the progress and work which was happening in Purandar taluka and specifically Sukalwadi. We had breakfast and again went to the fields for doing Shramdaan for more than 1 hr. Everyone was tired but had a smile on their faces because they knew that they are helping farmers and coming generations.

At 11 am everyone stopped and we started towards the village temple where villagers organized lunch for all of us. I had darshan at the village temple. We enjoyed the food very much and headed back to Pune.
